The Aquarius Centre, Hulme
We held two creative writing sessions, chatting with local residents about their memories of Manchester using Lifetimes Volume 5, Just Lately I Realise, and My Way of Living as our starting points. They were selected for their depictions of women’s struggle for personal independence, their descriptions of Manchester suburbs, and for the culture shock of moving from the rural Caribbean into crammed British inner city areas respectively.
Recollections were specific and vivid: Growing up in an industrial environment. The smells, noises and sights of the city. The underground indoor market in town. Displacement from Chorlton-on-Medlock to new builds in Hulme and the local residents’ struggle with local authorities to get facilities built such as Aquarius itself.
