Citizen 32

‘Radical poetry, fiction and art with a global view’ reads the tagline.

Set up by editors John G Hall, Christina McAlpine and Dave Toomer in the 2000s to platform political literature, it published mostly poetry, short stories, interviews and book reviews from Manchester- and north-west England-based contributors coming from a left-wing perspective alongside more well-known writers such as Roger McGough and Harold Pinter.  The themed issues were:

  •  Censored
  •  Sexuality
  •  Home
  •  Race
  •  War and Peace
  •  Class

A publishing date never appeared on the pages or the cover of a Citizen 32 issue. This was a deliberate choice from the editors who believe that the themes are timeless. References to political events and talking points (e.g. ASBOs, the Taliban and War in Afghanistan) as well as archival records held at Cultureword and on spoken word website Write Out Loud indicate that the magazine was initially in print around 2004 to 2008. McAlpine and Toomer continue to publish occasional issues.
